Is there real prawn meat in prawn balls?

5 out of 6 prawn ball products sold in supermarkets do not contain real prawn meat at all. Most prawn ball products FoodSavvy.sg investigated are made from cuttlefish and fish paste (surimi). So where does the perceived prawn flavour come from? Prawn powder and flavouring. Now you know.

Previously, we revealed crab stick, similarly, is also made from surimi (fish paste) and is devoid of real crab meat. While we are on the topic of surimi products, here is one ingredient on the food label of surimi products you will be familiar with- “flavour enhancer” or “E621”. Sounds benign enough doesn’t it? What is this ingredient? It is commonly known as MSG.
