Does a ‘Product of Singapore’ label mean the product originated from Singapore? Well yes and no.

Yes, the produce was grown or the food product was manufactured in Singapore.

No, take for example in the case of fresh milk, the source of milk may not be from a local farm but from an approved overseas farm and country. The milk is labelled ‘Product of Singapore’ because it has been processed and packaged here in Singapore.

Singaporeans are willing to pay a premium for products from certain countries while products from countries with poorer food safety standards are deemed as less desirable, thus declarations such as ‘Product of Singapore’ do create value for manufacturers as Singapore made products are perceived to be of higher quality. Moreover, local manufacturers are not required to declare the country of origin of raw ingredients on product labels.
